Edition 5 – Tuesday, October 31st, 2006 (submitted by Derreck Parsons)
News - Flag; There is absolutely no requirement for the clubhouse to have a red flag on it. The red flag on the building was originally meant for the purpose of the initial firing point. Now that there are several ranges with individual flags there is no requirement for it. The Nova Scotia flag will be raised instead.
Steel Plates – From now on the thin green steel plates will be locked away and only available by request. This unfortunately is due to individuals ignoring the colour-coding and damaging the targets making them a safety concern (ricochet).
Brass – Cleaning up brass after shooting is each individual shooters responsibility. This is your club, please keep it clean.
Saturdays – Please note, at the request of several members, some Saturday shoots will be in the new event schedule.
Lock Change – The new combination is available from the executive
Work Day Absentee Fee - As agreed upon on the quarterly and annual meetings a $20 Work Day Absentee Fee will be levied on any member that does not attend at least one work day per year or conducts work on behalf of the club in lieu of the work days. An audit of the previous twelve months will be conducted, and notices sent to any individuals that owe this fee. To better communicate this to new members this point will now be part of the range indoctrination briefing. Proposal Items
Your executive committee is submitting the following items to you for your approval. These items will further explained so that they may be voted on at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Indoor Range – A thirty meter, six firing point, indoor range will be made available to the club at no capital expense. This will be located in Milford.
As you are aware the committee asked that all major expense items should be voted on prior to execution. The following items will be voted on at the next AGM for pre-approval for when the funds and equipment become available.
1. New Road
2. Moving and Upgrading Outhouse
3. Finishing 200m/300m Range (New 100m Range)
4. Three Covered Firing Benches for the 200m Range
5. Sanding Floor of Pistol Ranges
6. Replacement Sand for Backstops
7. Purchase of Club Firearms
President’s Report
This is the last newsletter before the AGM. The existing executive committee has overseen the massive expansion of our facilities and by the date of the AGM the purchase of the land should be nearly finalized. As a club we have expanded in ranges, membership, and shooting styles. You are seen as the friendliest and most open club in the province. This is something to be proud of. We have several exciting new projects on the horizon. Please attend the AGM so that you are involved in the decision making. Remember this is “your” club. ~ Peter

What’s New?
Authors Note – Wow! The feedback on Lock, Stock, & Barrel has been terrific. It is wonderful that many of you are taking advantage of contributing to “your” newsletter. Keep it up. Continue sending your ideas, pictures, comments, etc. I will get each of them in where I can. And thank you for the support. Another note, if you want to be e-mailed the newsletter, rather than receive it by mail, e-mail me at derreck@hfx.eastlink.ca and I will add you to the distribution list. This will save the club a lot of money, so don’t delay, go “e-mail” today! ~ Derreck
MVRRC on the Internet! – One of our regular members Doug McIntyre has been working on a club website. He took it upon himself to initiate the project, and he has been doing a fantastic job. Outstanding job Doug!
Presidents Report – Congratulations people, we live again. The new government is not going to take away our pistols!
This is the second “Lock, Stock, & Barrel” and the feed back we have had so far is very positive. I am pleased to hear that several members are sending Derreck information and jokes to put into your newsletter. Secondly, all of you that have computers go to mvrifleandrevolverclub.com and take a look at our new website. Doug McIntyre has done a great job for us, any input you want to see contact at him at info@mvrifleandrevolverclub.com.
Since my moan in the newsletter, two back, we’ve had a great turnout for the last two work parties. We now need the help of any carpenters or builders to help repair the weather wall of the clubhouse. Please ring Garth at 845-2531 so that a date for a dedicated work party can be arranged.
Now for the really good news, over the past three years, our club has evolved to include many more pistol shooters. The club executive in recognition of this has pushed for the provision of more pistol-orientated competitions and range facilities. As you know last year we finished building our new 30 metre centerfire pistol range and, by altering the backstop and angling the shed slightly the .22 pistol range is re-classified as centerfire. The club has hosted three combat pistol matches over the past year which several members attended and enjoyed, as a result of this the committee tasked me to see what could be done to enhance our pistol ranges further. Today I saw the provincial firearms officer and he has authorized us to build a horseshoe range on the reverse of the 30 meter berm and to build a fire and movement centerfire pistol range behind the hundred meter rifle berm. I am in the process of costing this and should have a good idea before the next quarterly meeting. I want to hold two or more open matches in the spring to start to raise money for these ranges. Any other money raising ideas or donations will be readily accepted. Good Shooting!. ~ Peter
New Gate Combination – Effective Sunday, February 19th, 2006, the lock to our range gate will have a new combination. Contact the executive
Quotes
“The fascination of shooting as a sport depends almost wholly on whether you are at the right or wrong end of the gun.” ~ P.G. Wodehouse
“Some parents say it is toy guns that make boys warlike. But give a boy a rubber duck and he will seize its neck like the butt of a pistol and shout "Bang!"” ~ George F. Will
Submit a quote or a joke to share with your fellow shooters, hunters, and firearm enthusiasts. Call or e-mail it in, and I will place it in a future edition.
Secretary Stuff – Just squeezing in notes on a few items as your new secretary. My best to everyone, I hope you are all having a great shooting year! … Derreck
Memberships - Just to let everyone know, new memberships are still rolling in steadily. Word of mouth advertising is creating a ton of interest. Undoubtedly this is because of each of us being so proud of our club. Every time one of us tells another person about the clubs activities, facilities, or terrific membership, we are acting as ambassadors for our sport and our club. I can tell you that many people that call or write me looking for membership information are excited about what they have been hearing. Keep it up everyone!
Sign-In Sheets – I have printed a couple of hundred sign-in sheets and sent them out to the range. My apologies for not getting them out sooner, I failed to take note of them getting low. From now on I will keep on top of collection of old logs and distribution of the new ones in a timely manner. I have printed a ton of extras just waiting to be used. If anyone ever notices them getting low, please feel free to rattle my cage.
Colour Coding – In the near future you will see a small product of my anal-retentiveness. You should see three colours of florescent paint on the range. Any yellow objects will be considered “No Shoot” objects, or safety barriers. Any green targets will be meant for .22 calibre pistol or rifle. Orange or red will be meant as centerfire pistol or rifle targets. This system of colour coding is meant to enhance the life of our equipment. We have varying sizes of steel falling plates, and for instance when a thin plate is hit with a centerfire pistol, it creates a warp or dent, which cannot be easily repaired. Dents caused by rimfire calibre damage can be easily pounded out. Using the colour yellow on no shoot items may assist some new members in the future with identification of objects that should never be used as target stands or bases.
So please remember: Yellow = No Shoot Objects or Safety Barriers Green= .22 Cal Pistol or Rifle Targets Red or Orange= Centerfire Pistol or Rifle Targets
In Memoriam – I have received word that one of our lifetime members and friend to many, Aulden Higgins has passed away. A card has been sent to the Higgins family on behalf of the club. “…We were sincerely sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. From Aulden’s friends at the Musquodoboit Valley Rifle & Revolver Club.”
Insurance – Our Shooting Liability Insurance and Membership has been renewed with the National Firearms Association. Each member of MVRRC is now an Associate Member of the NFA. Please be diligent with printing guest names neatly on the sign-in sheets at the club, as I have to forward those names to the NFA for insurance coverage. I am currently in the process of preparing our fire insurance renewal for April. If you have any questions about our shooting insurance, feel free to drop me a line or give me a call.
Five Gun Fun Shoot Results – Peter Eliot 1st, Paul Girard 2nd, Dave Oickle 3rd, Austin Hines (Junior) & Opal Hines (Skittle).
Quarterly Club Meeting – Please do your best to attend the next Quarterly meeting, which will be held on Sunday, March 12th, 2006 after the .22 Shoot. This years club planning will be discussed an voted on.

What's new?
Author's Note - Hello, and welcome to the trial edition of "Lock, Stock, and Barrel".I am curious about whether or not the membership is interested in this style of newsletter. Please feel free to write or call to let me know what you think, any information you would like added; shoot ideas, advertisements, articles, or a new title, just let me know. How about anyone out there with a digital camera? Send in your shots taken at the club shoots. This is your newsletter! You can find details Below. Just a note on contacting me; I work shift work, so e-mailing me or leaving a message at my home number is the easiest way to get in touch with me. I will provide my cellular phone as well. ~ Derreck
President's Report - Great news! The twenty five yard pistol range has been upgraded back to centrefire. This was achieved by turning the building five degrees and by moving the impact area on the berm six feet to the right. Please ensure that all the targets are placed so the rounds hit the sand. And secondly, please don't shoot the skittles or plates off or in front of the retaining wall. This causes serious damage. A platform has been provided on top of the wall, please use it.
And now for a moan! One of our members (you know who you are) brought a group of guests to the range and proceeded to demonstrate ammo effect by shooting steel plates and smashing ice blocks. The only problem is that the steel plate was propped up at a 45 degree angle and therefore may have caused ricochet over the berm, and one of our shotgun stands was used to stand the ice on. Bad shooting placed 3 rounds into the stand instead of the target. Guys; this stuff costs us money and can be dangerous, please use common sense. ~ Peter.
New Gate Combination - Effective Thursday, December 15th, 2005, the lock on our range gate will have a new combination. (The combination will not be provided on the web, please contact a member of the executive).
Quotes; " Deer hunters will do anything for a buck" -Unknown "There's no shot hard to make, but a lot of them are just easy to miss" - James Tolin
Jokes - Three old rifle shooters are out walking. The first one says, "Windy, isn't it?" The second says, "No, it's Thursday!" The third one says, "So am I. Lets go get a beer."
